Hi Christof
Germany is definitely competitive price-wise. I also took a look at some companies there a while back. But the language can be a drawback, although I can muddle through. But my experience of German companies is that they need everything on paper and faxed through and the nice thing about the US (and UK recently) is that things just get done.
A friend of mine with a German server put up a cartoon from a magazine and ended up paying some legal firm a lot of money to stop them taking him to court over it. So, there are some downsides to Germany and it's enough to keep me away.

In my experience, Germany is one of the most competitive markets for web hosting and virtual servers - I'll soon be moving my virtual server to IP-Projects.de where the smallest package starts at EUR 4.90 and includes 256 MB RAM and 50 GB disk space... (but you'll probably need to speak German to be able to order it).

Hey,

What a great post. Thanks for writing this roundup. I'm one of the founders of SpiderOak and wanted to thank you and perhaps clarify things that may not have been obvious.

First, SpiderOak's primary goal is to provide zero-knowledge file sync and storage. We don't know your data, filenames, folders -- anything. On the server we only see sequentially numbered data blocks. It's quite boring for our server admins. :) Anyway -- that is the reason you have to create an account by downloading the software, and not on the web. At that time, SpiderOak generates encryption keys for you, which are never stored in plaintext. So, it's important this happens on your computer, not on our servers.

Apologies for not having an openSuse package yet. We're working our way through all the distributions so expect that soon. Glad to hear the Ubuntu 64 package worked well for you.

Finally, I wanted to note that SpiderOak is actually written in Python and C (we're all actually at PyCon right now.)

You might enjoy the SpiderOak 3.0 beta, which includes a number of new features from the 2.x series, including automated sync, a "keep your own copy" feature, and is about 4x faster. Just email beta at spideroak if you're interested.

Best regards, and thanks again.

-Alan

I don't know of a way to do that... I'm not saying it's not possible, but I wouldn't know how to go about it. Given that add-ons like Lightning are registered in the component database of thunderbird, and you are sharing the profile, I suspect it may be difficult.

I share a remotely mounted TB profile on an iMac and an AMD64 machine.

Is there a way to install the extension so that it can be used on both?

Thanks mate!
I have an auto blog running from my forums RSS feed using SmartRSS, though as you are experiencing too...I was getting around 250 spam comments per day.

You saved me a lotta time.
