Welcome to gnomedia codeworks!

This is a blog, a collection of articles, some software projects, some miscellaneous scripts, a kitchen sink... I hope you'll find something useful or interesting.

Desktop manager: XFCE4

October 26th, 2006

Every now and then I get the urge to try a different desktop manager. Normally I use KDE, but it puts a pretty heavy load on my machine, chews up memory and soon runs into ‘swap land’. However, I’ve been using KDE for years, so I’ve got it working how I want it to. But, sometimes the urge strikes to try something else, and this time I went for XFCE4, which is fast approaching V4.4.

WordPress update, site goes AWOL

January 2nd, 2006

Astute observers (thank you Shawn!) noticed that some of the pages were missing from the blog. In particular, the static pages. The dynamically generated posts were fine. Which is probably why I didn’t notice immediately.

Over XMas I upgraded WordPress to the latest/greatest release, V2.0. It has a very fancy new admin section and a bunch of other improvements… been extensively tested, in beta for weeks. What can go wrong???

Update to Slimming Down WordPress

August 10th, 2005

Back in February I wrote a short piece about stripping down WordPress to a more basic functionality (see [Wordpress on a Diet](http://codeworks.gnomedia.com/archives/2005/programming/wordpress/wordpress-lite/) ) and now I’ve just undertaken it for another site, so here is a bit more information, also making use of the latest version, [Wordpress](http://wordpress.org) ‘StrayHorn’ 1.5.1.3.

But more are getting through and moderating them takes time… so, as part of an upgrade to the site code, I’ve put in a new Spam catcher:
[Spam Karma 2](http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma)

LVM recovery tale.

June 1st, 2005

Over the weekend I had the worrying experience of losing my LVM settings and potentially all my data… a quick search on the web showed a confusing set of information, much of it for older versions of LVM and therefore rather suspect.

Well, I recovered all my data and it was really quite simple, so I’ve written up what I did in the hope that someone else, in a similar situation, will find it useful. It’s a scary thing, losing the whole hard disk and knowing that, in reality, its all there.

Site reorganisation

February 18th, 2004

Major site reorganisation and rewrite this month. The codeworks section has headed off to its own sub-domain at CodeWorks and the old links should get redirected over there.

Treks and Travels already have their own subdomain.

Plus the Westhost Tips and Tricks have had a major rewrite, especially the email and spam section, check them out at Westhost Tips and Tricks.

Treks and Travels

February 10th, 2004

So, finally I’ve put together some pages of photos and travelogues detailing our various travels in wild parts of the world. There are still a few to go up there, but I’ll take a break from scanning and gimping photographs for now…. there are a few hundred photos up there and it takes a while. Take a look at Treks and Travels and enjoy!
