Hi Christof
Germany is definitely competitive price-wise. I also took a look at some companies there a while back. But the language can be a drawback, although I can muddle through. But my experience of German companies is that they need everything on paper and faxed through and the nice thing about the US (and UK recently) is that things just get done.
A friend of mine with a German server put up a cartoon from a magazine and ended up paying some legal firm a lot of money to stop them taking him to court over it. So, there are some downsides to Germany and it's enough to keep me away.

In my experience, Germany is one of the most competitive markets for web hosting and virtual servers - I'll soon be moving my virtual server to IP-Projects.de where the smallest package starts at EUR 4.90 and includes 256 MB RAM and 50 GB disk space... (but you'll probably need to speak German to be able to order it).
