Hey,

What a great post. Thanks for writing this roundup. I'm one of the founders of SpiderOak and wanted to thank you and perhaps clarify things that may not have been obvious.

First, SpiderOak's primary goal is to provide zero-knowledge file sync and storage. We don't know your data, filenames, folders -- anything. On the server we only see sequentially numbered data blocks. It's quite boring for our server admins. :) Anyway -- that is the reason you have to create an account by downloading the software, and not on the web. At that time, SpiderOak generates encryption keys for you, which are never stored in plaintext. So, it's important this happens on your computer, not on our servers.

Apologies for not having an openSuse package yet. We're working our way through all the distributions so expect that soon. Glad to hear the Ubuntu 64 package worked well for you.

Finally, I wanted to note that SpiderOak is actually written in Python and C (we're all actually at PyCon right now.)

You might enjoy the SpiderOak 3.0 beta, which includes a number of new features from the 2.x series, including automated sync, a "keep your own copy" feature, and is about 4x faster. Just email beta at spideroak if you're interested.

Best regards, and thanks again.

-Alan
