So, on further investigation, the video card drivers were not the right ones. Instead of 'nvidia' it was loading the old 'nv' module. Which is probably good, as when I installed the correct nvidia packages they refused to load, leaving me with a blank screen. Well, not entirely blank, had a flashing cursor and a shell prompt, so I was quite at home there, but it's not what I expect from a graphics card with 128 mb of memory.
The error in the logs (/var/log/xorg.0.log) was something like:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.18.8-0.1-default/weak-updates/nvidia.ko): No such device
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!

The solution was to go to nvidia site (http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html) and download the correct package from there, and just follow the instructions. Everything went smoothly, now when I start up X I get a short nVidia splash screen and then on as normal.

I must say, there is generally a snappier feel to the desktop since then... :)
